1969 Reserva Tinto Viúva Gomes – Colares, Portugal

single-vineyard wine

Origin
The 1969 Reserva Tinto from Viúva Gomes comes from Colares on Portugal's Atlantic coast. The vines grow in deep sandy soils near the sea, which have always protected them from phylloxera and ensure the preservation of ungrafted plantings. Viúva Gomes is one of the most important guardians of the Colares tradition.

Aroma & Taste

Colares wines are known for their longevity; despite their age, this wine displays a remarkably dark, barely developed color with a slight brick hue at the rim. Aromatically, it exhibits a mature complexity, with notes of cedar and leather alongside dried fruit and a eucalyptus-like freshness. On the palate, it remains taut even after decades, with a firm, slightly angular tannin structure and lively acidity.

Special features of the 1969 vintage
A Reserva aged in the bottle for over fifty years since the 1969 vintage. As a historical detail, a 1969 bottle in the estate's showroom still bears the old spelling "Collares" with a double "l," which is no longer in use. Furthermore, until the 1970s, wines from Colares were bottled in the unusual size of 650 milliliters; therefore, an original 1969 vintage would not have been in the now-standard 750ml or 500ml format.

Conclusion
