2021 "Tradition" Pinot Noir dry Weingut Gabel - Palatinate
local wine
Origin:
The Gabel winery in Herxheim am Berg looks back on over 350 years of family history . Wines have been produced here since 1655, and today it is run by Oliver Gabel, the 13th generation. After formative years of training in Burgundy, Baden, and at top wineries in the Palatinate region, his focus is clearly on Burgundy varieties, which now account for around 70% of the vineyard area. Since the 1980s, the family has practiced organic viticulture , and since 2019, the wines have carried the organic certification . The calcareous soils surrounding Herxheim am Berg offer ideal conditions for mineral, structured, and long-lasting Pinot Noirs.
Expansion:
The "Tradition" line represents traditionally artisanal wines. The Pinot Noir was selectively harvested by hand , then spontaneously fermented on the skins, and aged in large wooden barrels up to 100 years old , as well as in French barriques. Around 12 months of aging in wood imparts a delicate flavor, depth, and structure. It was bottled unfiltered to preserve the authenticity of the terroir.
Aroma & Taste:
The 2021 Pinot Noir "Tradition" displays dark cherries, elderberry, subtle wood notes, and spicy accents of thyme, allspice, and dried porcini mushrooms on the nose. On the palate, it is juicy, clear, and balanced , with subtle, round tannins and a refreshing acidity that lends freshness and length. A light mineral undertone provides elegance and balance.
Food recommendation:
A versatile accompaniment to braised veal cheek, herb-roasted lamb loin, duck breast with red wine sauce , or earthy vegetable dishes like mushroom ragout and beetroot risotto . It also tastes great on its own in a Burgundy glass.
Special features of the 2021 vintage in the Palatinate:
The 2021 year was characterized by cool, damp weather in the spring and summer , combined with intensive work in the vineyards. However, a dry, golden autumn produced healthy, aromatic grapes with robust acidity . For Pinot Noir, this resulted in fresh, elegant wines with fine fruit , classic and age-worthy.
Conclusion:
The 2021 Pinot Noir "Tradition" from Weingut Gabel is a classic, Burgundy-inspired Pinot Noir that masterfully combines elegance, spice, and freshness . A wine that demonstrates how traditional winemaking and modern refinement come together in the Palatinate region.
