2023 Lorch Kapellenberg Riesling dry Winery Alexander Schregel - Rheingau
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
Lorch's Kapellenberg is one of the Rheingau's most traditional vineyards. First mentioned in 1480 as "behind the Chapel," its name derives from the former St. Mark's Chapel, which stood watch over Lorch in the Middle Ages. The south-facing location on the steep slope is characterized by loess-rich slate soils , which lend the Rieslings their distinctive, crystalline minerality. Lorch is considered a unique location in the Rheingau, as the slate character—otherwise typical of the Middle Moselle—determines its character and produces wines of cool precision and great radiance.
Expansion:
The grapes come from hand-picked plots in the Kapellenberg vineyards. As is customary with Alexander Schregel, fermentation occurs spontaneously , and the wine is bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulfur . Aging in traditional wooden barrels ensures structure and depth without obscuring the Riesling's freshness and clarity.
Aroma & Taste:
The nose reveals ripe stone fruits like peach and apricot, along with delicate citrus notes and a spicy, herbal freshness . On the palate, the wine is powerful and straightforward , carried by a precise, invigorating acidity and a pronounced slate minerality . Taut, elegant, and with a long, saline finish—a Riesling with character and depth.
Food recommendation:
A versatile accompaniment to grilled fish with herbs , poultry dishes with lemon sauce , or slightly spicy Asian cuisine . It also pairs perfectly with mature goat cheese or a risotto with green asparagus .
Special features of the 2023 vintage in the Rheingau:
2023 is considered a strong Riesling year in the Rheingau. After a rainy summer, the steep slopes benefited from a stable water supply. A golden autumn with cool nights ensured healthy harvests and a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity . The mountain vineyards in Rüdesheim and Lorch, in particular, produced aromatically complex, long-lasting Rieslings – fruit-forward, juicy, and characterized by their terroir .
Conclusion:
The 2023 Lorch Kapellenberg Riesling dry from Alexander Schregel is a precise, powerful slate-based Riesling with a clear signature. It combines the long history of the site with modern, artisanal winemaking, presenting itself as a characterful local wine with great future potential . Further proof of why Schregel is one of the most exciting young winemakers in the Rheingau.
