2021 Vina Vik Millahue – Cachapoal Valley/Chile
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
The Viña VIK project was founded in 2004 by Norwegian entrepreneurs Alexander and Carrie Vik, who set out to create a world-class wine in Chile. To achieve this, they acquired 4,300 hectares in Millahue, in the Cachapoal Valley—a valley whose name means "place of gold" in the indigenous language. Today, the estate comprises 327 hectares of vineyards located within a vast nature reserve. The soils consist of deep, porous, weathered granite rock with excellent drainage, and the climate is Mediterranean with maritime influences that mitigate the summer heat.
Expansion:
The 2021 Viña VIK is a blend of 77% Cabernet Franc and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon . The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented with natural yeasts (Fleuroir method) . Aging took place 90% in French oak barriques for 26 months, supplemented by 10% in amphorae made from the estate's own clay. This combination gives the wine both depth and structure, as well as a mineral, almost floating elegance.
Aroma & Taste:
On the nose, the wine unfolds ripe red and black fruits , accompanied by white and black pepper notes, subtle spice, and hints of violet . On the palate, it is powerful yet silky , with perfectly polished tannins that remain in motion, creating a fine, vibrant tension . Graphite, minerality, and subtle spicy notes extend the impression into the seemingly endless finish . A wine of aristocratic elegance and great precision.
Food recommendation:
Ideal with herb-flavored rack of lamb , beef fillet with pepper sauce , or braised venison . It also unfolds its full depth with mature hard cheeses or porcini mushroom dishes . A wine that impresses both in fine cuisine and as a standalone wine in the glass.
Special features of the 2021 vintage in Cachapoal Valley:
2021 was a cool, changeable vintage in central Chile: late frosts reduced yields, and the summer was unusually cloudy and cool , before a warm autumn allowed for full phenolic ripeness. The wines are therefore aromatic, with a tight structure and lively acidity , less opulent, but with classic elegance and long ageing potential .
Conclusion:
The 2021 Viña VIK is the winery's flagship wine —a cuvée that impressively embodies the project's avant-garde ambition. It combines the power of the Chilean Andes with the elegance of a great Bordeaux , interpreted in a modern, sustainable viticulture philosophy. A wine of international stature that demonstrates why the Cachapoal Valley DO is considered one of the most exciting terroirs in South America today.
