Product Information
2014 Vom Stein, Riesling Smaragd dry Nikolaihof – Wachau
Single Vineyard Wine
Origin
The Nikolaihof in the Wachau is one of Austria's oldest wineries and has been working according to biodynamic principles for decades. The Vom Stein vineyard is characterized by barren primary rock soils with a high proportion of gneiss and mica schist. These soils give the Riesling a clear mineral structure and precise acidity.
Vinification
The grapes were selectively hand-picked and processed traditionally. Fermentation took place spontaneously with natural yeasts. The aging occurred in large, old wooden barrels, allowing structure and texture to develop harmoniously. The wine was matured with patience to clearly reflect its origin.
Aroma and Taste
In the glass, the wine shows a clear golden yellow. The nose reveals notes of ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, and fine herbal spice. On the palate, it is taut and precise, supported by vibrant acidity and pronounced minerality. The finish is long and salty.
Food Pairings
Ideal with pan-fried pike-perch, char, or shellfish. Also suitable with Asian dishes with a delicate spiciness or with aged hard cheese. Serve at 10–12 °C.
Vintage Characteristics in the Growing Region
The 2014 vintage in the Wachau was characterized by changeable conditions with a cool summer. Careful selection was crucial to preserve healthy grapes with clear freshness. The wines show a precise acid structure and elegant aromatics with good aging potential.
Conclusion
The 2014 Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd dry represents a mineral-driven, structured style of the Wachau. With clear fruit, precise acidity, and lasting length, it displays the classic signature of Nikolaihof.
