Product Information
2020 Gau-Weinheim Chardonnay dry – Stumm & Klein – Rheinhessen
Local Wine
Origin
The Stumm & Klein project was founded in 2019 and stands for high-class Chardonnay from chalky vineyards in Rheinhessen. The vines in the Gau-Weinheimer Kaisergarten grow on calcareous marl soils with a high carbonate content, which give the wine minerality, tension, and longevity. With only 0.5 ha of vineyards, this local wine is a strictly limited rarity.
Winemaking
Selective hand harvesting and whole-bunch pressing. Spontaneous fermentation in used barriques with 15 months of full lees aging, followed by 3 months of maturation in stainless steel. Bottled unfiltered for maximum authenticity.
Aroma and Taste
On the nose, ripe pear, yellow apple, and white flowers, complemented by brioche, almond, and a delicate smokiness. On the palate, creamy, powerful, and at the same time taut, with fresh acidity and precise structure. The finish is saline, mineral, and long-lasting.
Food Pairings
Ideal with sea bass, poultry in cream sauce, seafood, or mushroom risotto. Also suitable with aged Comté or goat cheese.
Vintage Characteristics in the Region
The 2020 vintage was hot and dry, but was balanced by calcareous soils. The wines show ripe fruit, concentration, and mineral freshness.
Conclusion
The 2020 Gau-Weinheim Chardonnay is a Burgundian-influenced, mineral, and elegant Chardonnay. A precise, limited local wine with great aging potential.
