2020 Vogelsang Riesling dry Grosse Lage Domäne Serrig/Markus Molitor – Mosel/Saar
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

The first vintage (2020) of the Vogelsang Große Lage made an exclamation mark and was awarded 100 points by Robert Parker . The Serrig estate on the Saar is an impressive monopoly site with around 25 hectares of vineyards dedicated entirely to Riesling. The steep, sometimes extremely barren slopes consist predominantly of blue and grey slate , while deeper soils can be found at the foot of the slopes. Around five hectares come from old vines from the early 1990s , supplemented by new plantings from Selection Massale of old, ungrafted vines from the Molitor winery. Since taking over in 2016, Markus Molitor has cultivated the estate with the uncompromising precision that has made him one of the leading winemakers on the Moselle.

Expansion:

The grapes for the Vogelsang Große Lage are harvested exclusively by hand , rigorously selected, and carefully processed. After gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with the vineyard's own yeasts takes place, followed by a long aging on the fine lees in 3,000-liter Stockinger barrels . The goal is to capture the Saar terroir in the bottle with the greatest possible transparency and clarity.

Aroma & Taste:

The nose reveals citrus fruit, peach, and apricot , accompanied by clear slate minerality. On the palate, the wine is taut and lively , carried by a precise yet harmoniously integrated acidity. The fruit is juicy and complemented by delicate herbal spice and salty minerality. The finish is long, elegant, and characterized by puristic clarity. A Riesling that masterfully combines finesse and intensity.

Food recommendation:

Vogelsang pairs perfectly with grilled zander with herbs or delicate seafood such as scallops . Veal loin with morel sauce also harmonizes beautifully with its structure. In Asian cuisine, it excels with dishes flavored with ginger, lime, or coriander. It is also suitable as a solo wine for special occasions. A versatile wine for fine dining and private moments of enjoyment.

Special features of the 2020 vintage on the Saar:

2020 was a warm and dry year , marking the third consecutive dry cycle. Despite the heat, the grapes remained healthy, as fungal infections and pests were rare . The harvest began early, often as early as mid-September, and yielded perfectly healthy Riesling grapes with pronounced aromas and moderate acidity. Average must weights of 80–85° Oechsle resulted in ripe, varietal-typical wines. Overall, 2020 is considered a good to very good vintage with fruit-focused, balanced Rieslings.

Conclusion:

The 2020 Vogelsang Riesling Große Lage demonstrates the full potential of this unique monopoly site even in its first vintage. Precise minerality, delicate fruit, and taut acidity combine to create a wine of great elegance. It embodies the Saar style in its purest form and clearly bears the signature of Markus Molitor. The balance of energy and finesse gives it long aging potential. It's no coincidence that the premier vintage was awarded 100 Parker points .
