2021 Meursault 1er Cru "Poruzot" Domaine Vincent Latour - Burgundy
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

The Premier Cru "Les Poruzots" site is one of Meursault's most renowned vineyards, located on a sun-drenched south-facing slope toward Puligny-Montrachet. The name likely derives from an old Burgundian term for "stony, rocky area ." Domaine Vincent Latour's 0.87-hectare plot was planted between 1947 and 1991. The subsoil consists of marl and limestone , with a fertile, reddish-clay loam layer that provides both nutrients and minerality.

Expansion:

The vines at Poruzots are trained 90% using the Guyot system and 10% using the Cordon de Royat system – two traditional pruning methods in Burgundy. With the Guyot system , a long shoot is left standing each year to produce grapes. This makes the vine flexible and allows the yield to be adjusted depending on the vintage. With the Cordon de Royat system , the vine grows like a small arm along a wire, with several short, sturdy shoots that bear fruit each year – fewer, but with particularly concentrated and even ripening. This combination ensures that the wines are consistent, deep, and expressive . After being hand-picked, the grapes for this wine were lightly crushed and gently pressed. Fermentation took place in 600-liter oak demi-muids , 30% of which was new wood . The wine was then aged on the lees for 12 months and a further 4-6 months in stainless steel tanks to preserve tension, minerality, and elegance.

Aroma & Taste:

The 2021 Meursault "Poruzots" displays an intense, elegant bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, white blossoms, and fresh almonds , along with delicate roasted aromas from the wood. On the palate, it is powerful, dense, and structured , supported by lively acidity and the typical saline minerality of the site. The combination of fullness, precision, and fine spice ensures a long, complex finish. A Premier Cru with classic Meursault character and great aging potential.

Food recommendation:

Perfect with scallops in saffron sauce , lobster, or fine fish . It also pairs well with veal fillet with morels or grilled poultry . It also reveals its full depth of flavor with mature cheeses like Comté or Beaufort.

Special features of the 2021 vintage in Burgundy:

2021 was a challenging year with frost, rain, and disease pressure, which significantly reduced yields. However, the wines exhibited a classic Burgundy character : less opulent, but with finesse, freshness, and precise acidity . In the case of Chardonnay, this resulted in wines reminiscent of earlier, cooler vintages—ideal for lovers of terroir-focused, elegant Burgundies.

Conclusion:

The 2021 Meursault 1er Cru "Les Poruzots" from Vincent Latour is a Premier Cru that impressively expresses the strengths of this heritage-rich site: power, minerality, and elegance . With old vines, precise aging, and a clear signature, it combines classic Burgundy with modern excitement. A wine for the patient—and a highlight in the portfolio of the domaine, which has consistently stood for authenticity and provenance under Vincent Latour since 1998.
