2022 Dalsheim Hubacker Riesling dry FF Peters - Rheinhessen
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

Felix Peters (1977–2024) shaped the German wine scene for over two decades. After studying viticulture in Geisenheim, his path took him abroad, to Burgenland at Schloss Halbturn and to Burgundy at Domaine de la Vougeraie , where he developed his passion for terroir-focused, Burgundy-inspired wines. In 2004, he took over as operations manager at St. Antony in Nierstein and, with great commitment, led the traditional, then-struggling estate back to the top. In 2017 , he finally founded his own winery , F. & F. Peters, in Nierstein – small, artisanal, with an uncompromising focus on quality. With just 4.5 hectares of vineyards, the winery sees itself as an artisanal operation that strives for the highest quality over class rather than quantity. The Dalsheimer Hubacker vineyard at the southern end of Rheinhessen is one of the most famous locations for top-quality Rieslings and is characterized by its yellow limestone. Since the success of Klaus-Peter Keller, it has been considered one of Germany’s “Grand Cru” addresses.

Expansion:

The grapes are carefully hand-picked into small vats and then gently pressed as whole clusters – deliberately with plenty of air contact. The must, along with the lees, is transferred to stainless steel tanks and fermented spontaneously . The relatively cool fermentation hall allows for slow fermentation, allowing for prolonged contact with the lees, which supports the slightly reductive, precise style . Yields were significantly reduced to achieve optimal ripeness while simultaneously expressing the mineral depth of the limestone.

Aroma & Taste:

The 2022 Hubacker Riesling boasts an enormous complexity of aromas. On the nose, it is clear and crystalline with aromas of mango, tangerine, and orange , complemented by lemon balm, pink grapefruit, and hints of woodruff . On the palate , lime, pineapple, and juicy peach combine with a dense, silky texture. The limestone-influenced minerality lends it a salty freshness, supported by precise acidity. The finish is very long, zesty, and yet elegant , a prime example of the Wonnegau terroir.

Food recommendation:

This Riesling is an ideal accompaniment to grilled sea bass with citrus herbs , veal loin with morel sauce , or Asian dishes with lime and ginger . Mature goat cheese or a risotto with green asparagus also harmonize perfectly.

Special features of the 2022 vintage in Rheinhessen:

The 2022 vintage in Rheinhessen was characterized by drought and heat, although the Wonnegau region was less affected than the Rote Hang . While the summer months brought stress, the rain in September provided relief. This allowed for the harvest of healthy, aromatically ripe grapes with moderate alcohol and clear acidity. Overall, 2022 is considered a good Riesling vintage , with fruit-forward yet minerally-driven wines.

Conclusion:

The Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling 2022 from Felix Peters combines the minerality of limestone with the winemaker's Burgundy-inspired style . It stands for dense, powerful Rieslings that simultaneously possess crystalline freshness and elegance. A wine that underscores the distinctive character of the F. & F. Peters winery and presents the Hubacker in a new interpretation – juicy, precise, and with great aging potential.
