2022 Gau-Weinheim Chardonnay dry – Rheinhessen
local wine
Origin:
The 2022 Gau-Weinheim Chardonnay dry comes from the Kaisergarten vineyard in Gau-Weinheim , a site with exceptionally calcareous soils . The limestone marl and limestone subsoil provide a distinctive minerality , tension, and ageability. The densely planted vines with Burgundy genetics produce small, highly concentrated grapes. The result is a Chardonnay that uncompromisingly reflects the terroir.
Expansion:
The grapes were selectively harvested by hand and pressed whole bunches. The wine was aged on the full lees for 18 months in used barriques before resting for a further few months in stainless steel. No fining, no filtration, minimal sulfurization —a deliberately purist approach that emphasizes clarity and authenticity.
Aroma & Taste:
In the glass, the wine displays a bright golden yellow. The nose reveals white blossoms, ripe pears, and yellow apple , along with hints of citrus zest, brioche, and hazelnut . On the palate, it is taut and juicy , with a creamy texture and lively acidity . The precise minerality lingers on the long, saline finish—a Chardonnay full of energy and elegance.
Food recommendation:
Perfect with grilled fish , poultry in light sauces , seafood , or fine goat cheese . Its structure and balance make it a versatile companion for fine dining.
Special features of the 2022 vintage in Rheinhessen:
2022 was characterized by a hot, dry summer , which placed great demands on the vines. But timely rainfall in September restored balance. The grapes ripened healthily and produced fruit-focused, clear wines with moderate alcohol . Chardonnay, in particular, was powerful, precise, and with a fine acid structure – a vintage full of excitement.
Conclusion:
The 2022 Gau-Weinheim Chardonnay dry is a powerful yet delicate wine that combines Burgundian elegance with the saline minerality of Rheinhessen . A Chardonnay with depth, energy, and great potential for development .
