2022 Chardonnay dry - Rheinhessen
Estate wine

Origin:

The young Stumm & Klein winery was founded in 2019 by Frank Stumm and Torsten Klein in Gau-Weinheim . The two friends share a long history and a vision of cultivating Chardonnay at the highest level in Rheinhessen. Their vines grow in the Kaisergarten , one of Rheinhessen's most limestone-rich sites. With a carbonate content of up to 75% in the soil, marl and limestone shape the character of the wines: cool, salty-mineral, and long-lasting .

Expansion:

The grapes were harvested by hand , then gently pressed as whole bunches and vinified individually. The 2022 estate wine matured for 18 months on the full lees in used barriques before being bottled unfiltered. The wood remains discreetly in the background, lending structure and richness without overpowering the clear fruit.

Aroma & Taste:

In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant golden yellow . The nose combines white blossoms, ripe pear, and yellow apple with a hint of citrus zest , along with delicate brioche notes and roasted hazelnut . On the palate, it is juicy yet taut , supported by lively acidity (7.9 g/l). The creamy texture is balanced by a cool, chalky minerality. The finish is long, precise, and saline-mineral —a wine with energy and elegance.

Food recommendation:

It pairs perfectly with grilled fish with lemon butter , poultry in light sauces , seafood , or even fine goat cheese . Its power and elegance make it ideal for both fine dining and as a sophisticated solo wine .

Special features of the 2022 vintage in Rheinhessen:

The 2022 vintage was characterized by a hot, dry summer. Water shortages put young vines under particular pressure, while deep-rooted vines like those in the Kaisergarten benefited from the calcareous soils. Rain in mid-September brought relief and extended the ripening period, allowing the grapes to be harvested at a healthy and aromatic ripeness. The white wines of the vintage are fruity, clear, and precise , with less acidity than 2021, but plenty of juiciness and balance.

Conclusion:

The 2022 dry Chardonnay is Stumm & Klein's estate wine —and yet anything but a simple entry-level wine. With its concentrated fruit, fine oak integration, and typical limestone minerality, it impressively demonstrates the signature of this young project. Only 858 bottles were produced—a rare, characterful Chardonnay that exemplifies Stumm & Klein's quality and ambition even at its base.
