2023 Chardonnay dry Clemens Rosenkranz - Rheingau
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

The 2023 dry Chardonnay from Clemens Rosenkranz comes from Hochheim , in the eastern part of the Rheingau, where the Main River shapes the climate. Unlike most Rheingau wine towns on the Rhine, Hochheim is characterized by its fertile, deep soils rich in clay and limestone. These provide the vines with optimal water and nutrients, giving the wines an invigorating juiciness . The Chardonnay grows on a limestone vein in eastern Hochheim , planted on vines with Burgundy genetics that are only six years old. The high planting density of around 7,150 vines per hectare ensures a deliberate reduction in yield per vine and thus concentrated, complex grapes .

Expansion:

Fermentation and aging took place in traditional half-barrel and pièce barrels . The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and rested on the full lees for 12 months before blending the barrels . It then matured for another 12 months in stainless steel tanks until bottling in August 2025. The 20% new oak content gives the Chardonnay a fine structure and elegance without overpowering the fruit.

Aroma & Taste:

On the nose, the wine presents yellow fruits, citrus, and white flowers , accompanied by subtle nutty and buttery notes from the wood. On the palate, it is taut, creamy, and yet lively , with precise acidity and salty minerality from the limestone soil. Subtle hints of vanilla, brioche, and a delicate smokiness add additional depth. A Chardonnay with clear structure, length, and elegance , combining Burgundy finesse with Rheingau origins.

Food recommendation:

Ideal with grilled fish , poultry in creamy sauces , risotto with porcini mushrooms , but also with goat cheese or shellfish . Its balance of creaminess and minerality makes it a versatile accompaniment to fine cuisine .

Special features of the 2023 vintage in the Rheingau:

The year 2023 in the Rheingau was characterized by a cool spring and a delayed flowering process. A rainy early summer demanded considerable attention in the vineyards. It wasn't until mid-August that a stable, warm late summer set in, ensuring excellent ripeness . The golden autumn with cool nights produced healthy, aromatic grapes with balanced acidity and elegance . It is considered a great vintage for Riesling, but Burgundy varieties such as Chardonnay also benefited from precise selection, demonstrating strength and freshness .

Conclusion:

The 2023 dry Chardonnay from Clemens Rosenkranz is a powerful, elegant wine that impressively captures Hochheim's limestone character . With its Burgundian style, creamy texture, and precise minerality, it combines origin and craftsmanship at a high level – a Chardonnay with character, depth, and great potential for development.
