2023 Furmint "Vom Sandstein" dry Herrenhof-Lamprecht - Styria
local wine

Origin:

The Lamprecht manor house is located in Markt Hartmannsdorf, about 30 kilometers east of Graz, and is deeply connected to the region's history. The Augustinian Canons practiced viticulture here as early as the Middle Ages, before abandoning this practice in the 19th century. On the Buchertberg , the vines thrive on a south-southeast-facing site of calcareous sandstone, silt, and gravel —a terroir characterized by freshness, minerality, and elegance. With Furmint , a traditional grape variety from Southeast Europe and formerly known as "Mosler" in Styria, Gottfried Lamprecht consciously builds on this ancient diversity, creating a connection between history and the future. The first vines were planted in 2009 and are therefore still young (4–14 years old), but already impressively demonstrate the potential of the site.

Expansion:

The grapes were selectively harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts . The wine was aged in Startin barrels , a traditional Styrian barrel size with a capacity of 600 liters (or 300 liters for a "half" Startin). These barrels date back to the time when Vorau Abbey operated the manor house. After vinification, the wines were transferred to Startin barrels and transported to the monastery by horse-drawn or oxcart. Today, Lamprecht uses this barrel shape not only as a historical reference, but also because the volume creates an ideal balance between oxygen exposure and aroma preservation .

Aroma & Taste:

The 2023 Furmint "Vom Sandstein" has a clear and cool aroma of citrus fruits, green apple, and white blossoms , accompanied by a delicate herbal note. On the palate, it is taut and lively, with precise acidity, salty minerality, and a clear structure . The sandstone soils lend it a characteristic tension that lingers in the long, mineral finish. A wine that combines lightness with substance and delights even in its youth. For those who want to get even more out of this wine, we recommend aerating it or opening it approximately one hour before consumption.

Food recommendation:

Furmint is a versatile accompaniment to grilled fish , seafood , or poultry with fresh herbs . It also unfolds its full freshness and precision with vegetable dishes such as asparagus or zucchini risotto .

Special features of the 2023 vintage in Styria:

2023 produced the smallest harvest since 2016 , due to coulouring and downy mildew. Nevertheless, the wines impress with their density, extract, and moderate alcohol levels . Abundant summer rainfall prevented acidity problems, while a long autumn ensured optimal ripeness. The result is pointed, harmonious wines with clear fruit and fine structure – ideal conditions for an exciting Furmint like this.

Conclusion:

The 2023 Furmint "Vom Sandstein" is a clear statement: a heritage grape variety, reinterpreted in a traditional aging vessel with deep regional roots. It combines authentic origins, historical depth, and precise, modern viticulture . A wine that showcases the unique character of the Lamprecht estate and impressively revives the historical diversity of Styrian viticulture.
