2023 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Egon Müller - Mosel/Saar
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
The Egon Müller-Scharzhof winery in Wiltingen on the Saar is one of the world's most legendary Riesling estates. Owned by the Müller family since 1797, it is now managed by Egon Müller IV, the 8th generation of the family. The heart of the estate is the Scharzhofberg , one of Germany's most famous vineyards and internationally synonymous with great Rieslings. The south-facing, barren Devonian slate soils retain warmth while simultaneously producing an incomparable mineral tension. The Kabinett wines from this vineyard are legendary for their balance of lightness, finesse, and impressive aging potential.
Expansion:
Like all of the house's wines, the Kabinett is spontaneously fermented in traditional Moselle fouders (1,000-liter wooden barrels) and then aged there. Botrytis is deliberately allowed , even in the Kabinett, creating depth and complexity. There is no filtration or modern intervention – Egon Müller uncompromisingly follows traditional methods that have remained unchanged for generations.
Aroma & Taste:
The 2023 Scharzhofberger Kabinett opens with a delicate, playful nose of white flowers, citrus fruits, vineyard peach, and green apple , underscored by the typical smoky, mineral spice of slate. On the palate, it is ethereally light, almost weightless , carried by a crystal-clear acidity that perfectly balances the delicate residual sweetness . Delicate hints of honeydew melon, lime, and salty minerality provide tremendous tension and length. A prime example of elegance, precision, and easy drinking.
Food recommendation:
Ideal as an aperitif or with Asian cuisine with a subtle touch of spice , sushi, ceviche, or light dishes with fresh herbs. This Riesling also impresses with its complexity, pairing well with fresh goat's cheese or simply as a meditative solo wine.
Special features of the 2023 vintage on the Saar:
2023 was a cool, rainy vintage , which particularly benefited the Riesling vines. Despite the challenges of high rainfall during the growing season, selective harvesting and consistent vineyard management produced very ripe, aromatic grapes . High acidity ensures vibrant freshness, while a delicate residual sweetness maintains balance. Experts view 2023 as a vintage with classic Mosel characteristics , characterized by excitement, finesse, and great aging potential.
Conclusion:
The 2023 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is an iconic Saar Riesling that combines lightness and depth. A wine of global appeal that delights young winemakers and matures into a legend after decades of maturation.
