2023 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Egon Müller – Mosel / Saar
Single-vineyard wine
Origin:
The Egon Müller-Scharzhof winery in Wiltingen an der Saar is one of the most renowned Riesling estates worldwide. Owned by the Müller family since 1797, it is now run by Egon Müller IV, the eighth generation. The heart of the estate is the Scharzhofberg, one of Germany's most famous vineyards and internationally a symbol for great Rieslings. The south-facing, barren Devonian slate soils store heat and give the wines a precise, mineral tension. Particularly the Kabinett wines from this vineyard stand for balance, finesse and long aging potential.
Vinification:
The Kabinett is – as it has been for generations – spontaneously fermented in traditional Mosel fuders (1,000-liter wooden barrels) and then aged there. Botrytis is deliberately allowed in small proportions to promote depth and complexity. Filtration and modern interventions are avoided – Egon Müller remains true to his traditional craftsmanship, which has endured for centuries.
Aroma & Taste:
The 2023 Scharzhofberger Kabinett opens with a delicate nose of white flowers, citrus fruits, vineyard peach, and green apple, accompanied by smoky, mineral slate spice. On the palate, it presents itself as light, precise, and balanced, supported by a clear acidity that balances the subtle residual sweetness. Hints of honeydew melon, lime, and salty minerality give it structure, freshness, and length. A Riesling with elegance, tension, and precise alignment.
Food pairing:
Recommended as an accompaniment to Asian dishes with subtle spice, to sushi, ceviche or light dishes with fresh herbs. It also impresses with its freshness and balance with fresh goat cheese or light appetizers.
Characteristics of the 2023 vintage in the Saar:
The 2023 vintage was cool and rainy, which benefited the Riesling vines. Despite the challenging growing season, ripe, aromatic grapes could be harvested through precise picking and careful vineyard work. The high acidity gives the wines vibrant freshness, while the fine residual sweetness maintains balance. Experts consider 2023 a vintage with classic Mosel typicity, characterized by finesse, clarity, and aging potential.
Conclusion:
The 2023 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett represents classic Saar elegance and precise craftsmanship. It combines lightness and depth, freshness and structure – a characterful Riesling that reflects the tradition and style of Scharzhofberg in a modern form.
