2024 Mertesdorf Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett VDP.Grosse Lage Weingut Maximin Grünhaus - Mosel/Ruwer
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
The traditional Maximin Grünhaus winery near Mertesdorf on the Ruwer river looks back on a history that stretches back to 966 , when Emperor Otto I donated the vineyards to the Benedictine monastery of St. Maximin. The estate is still run by the von Schubert family, who acquired it in the 19th century. The monopoly on the three vineyards of Bruderberg, Herrenberg, and Abtsberg is famous, and their historical hierarchy remains intact to this day: Abtsberg for the abbots, Herrenberg for the choirmasters, and Bruderberg for the monks. Abtsberg, with a slope of up to 75% and soils of blue Devonian slate , is considered the estate's most prestigious location and has been producing delicate, long-lasting Rieslings for centuries, which are among the great classics of the Mosel.
Expansion:
The vines for the Abtsberg Kabinett are rooted in the steepest plots on mineral-rich blue slate. Harvesting is carried out exclusively by hand with multiple selections. The wine is vinified according to classic Grünhaus tradition: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts in barrels or stainless steel, and gentle vinification without fining. The Kabinett is deliberately harvested at a lower must weight to preserve the characteristic lightness, freshness, and minerality of this Prädikat level.
Aroma & Taste:
In the glass, the wine displays a light lemon yellow . The nose reveals green apples, vineyard peaches, and citrus fruits , complemented by white blossoms and subtle slate notes . On the palate, it is light-footed and juicy , carried by a precise acidity and subtle sweetness that are perfectly balanced. The texture remains delicate, the finish fresh and mineral. A classic Kabinett with finesse, tension, and elegance .
Food recommendation:
It pairs perfectly with fried zander with lemon butter , slightly spicy Asian dishes (e.g., shrimp curry), or fresh goat cheese with herbs . Apple tart or lemon sorbet also make a fine addition to the playful balance of sweetness and acidity.
Special features of the 2024 vintage on the Ruwer:
The 2024 vintage on the Mosel was characterized by late frosts, fungal diseases, and high labor costs. Frost events in April, especially on the Ruwer, led to significant yield losses. Nevertheless, healthy, golden-yellow grapes were harvested. The Rieslings benefited from the mild weather in September and October, which favored slow ripening. Overall, 2024 is considered a classic Kabinett and Spätlese vintage with aromatic fruit, moderate alcohol, and a clear acid structure—a year for elegant, drinkable Rieslings.
Conclusion:
The Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett 2024 embodies the essence of the Mosel Kabinett: light, mineral, playful, and of great precision . It combines the long tradition of Abtsberg with the winery's philosophy of producing wines of finesse and elegance. A delight already now, but with potential for development. A wine that is considered an ambassador of the Ruwer region and the Kabinett culture .
