2024 Mertesdorf Bruderberg Riesling Kabinett VDP.Grosse Lage Weingut Maximin Grünhaus - Mosel/Ruwer
local wine

Origin:

The Maximin Grünhaus winery on the Ruwer River near Mertesdorf is one of the most traditional estates in Germany. As early as 966, the vineyards were transferred to the Benedictine monastery of St. Maximin in Trier. The von Schubert family has run the estate since the 19th century. The monopoly ownership includes the three historic vineyards of Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg . While Abtsberg is famous for its refined elegance and Herrenberg produces juicy, spicy Rieslings , Bruderberg, with just 1 hectare, is the smallest and most independent vineyard . Its eastern exposure and cool blue slate soils produce racy, herbaceous, and minerally-characterized wines that are significantly sharper and saltier than the wines of its larger sisters.

Expansion:

The grapes are carefully and selectively harvested by hand . After gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts takes place in traditional foudres or stainless steel. The wine is aged without fining to preserve the distinctive terroir character. The deliberately lower must weight during the harvest preserves the lightness typical of a Kabinett .

Aroma & Taste:

In the glass, the wine is a light lemon yellow . The nose reveals green apple, lime, and yellow peach , accompanied by spicy herbs, white blossoms, and cool slate minerality . On the palate, it is vital and taut , with prominent acidity, clear fruit, and a distinct salty note that distinguishes it from Herrenberg and Abtsberg. With a little aeration, a fine texture reveals itself, harmoniously rounding off the racy character. The finish is fresh, herbaceous, and long-lasting .

Food recommendation:

Perfect with oysters with lemon zest , grilled trout with herbs , or Vietnamese summer rolls with fresh mint . It also pairs well with goat's cheese , highlighting its delicate flavor.

Special features of the 2024 vintage on the Ruwer:

The 2024 vintage on the Mosel produced one of the smallest harvests in decades, marked by late frosts, hail, and high disease pressure . Strict selection was necessary, but the Rieslings benefited from mild days and cool nights in September and October. The result is delicate, fruit-forward Kabinett and Spätlese wines with moderate alcohol and lively acidity. 2024 is therefore considered a classic Kabinett vintage of high quality.

Conclusion:

The Bruderberg Riesling Kabinett 2024 is the most distinctive representative of the three Grünhäuser Kabinetts: racy, herbal, and salty and mineral . It showcases the edgy, wild side of the Ruwer, clearly distinguishing itself from the nobility of the Abtsberg and the spiciness of the Herrenberg. A characterful Kabinett, it delights with its youthful vibrancy and simultaneously exemplifies the uniqueness of this smallest vineyard site .
