2024 Mertesdorf Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett VDP.Grosse Lage Weingut Maximin Grünhaus - Mosel/Ruwer
local wine
Origin:
The Maximin Grünhaus winery on the Ruwer River near Mertesdorf is one of the oldest and most renowned estates in Germany. The vineyards were transferred to the Benedictine monastery of St. Maximin in Trier as early as 966 , and the von Schubert family has managed the estate since the 19th century. The three historic monopoly vineyards of Bruderberg, Abtsberg, and Herrenberg continue to shape the winery's profile. The Herrenberg covers approximately 19 hectares, is somewhat cooler and less steep than the Abtsberg, and is characterized by red Devonian slate . The wines are considered juicy, flavorful, and, compared to the Abtsberg Rieslings, often accessible early, yet also possess considerable aging potential.
Expansion:
The grapes for the Herrenberg Kabinett are carefully selected and hand-picked . After gentle pressing , spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts takes place in traditional barrels or stainless steel. The wine is aged using a reductive method and without fining to preserve the typical Ruwer freshness and minerality . The low must weight at the harvest guarantees the classic Kabinett style: delicate sweetness, moderate alcohol levels, and great drinking pleasure.
Aroma & Taste:
The wine presents a light straw yellow color . Ripe apple, vineyard peach, and citrus fruits dominate the nose, accompanied by herbal spice, floral notes, and a light slate minerality . On the palate, the Kabinett is juicy and light-footed , with delicate fruit sweetness, lively acidity, and an invigorating, almost salty minerality. The finish is creamy, spicy, and clear , typical of the Herrenberg.
Food recommendation:
Ideal with trout meunière with parsley potatoes , roasted chicken with lemon and thyme sauce , or Asian dishes like Szechuan shrimp . Fresh goat cheese with herbs also harmonizes with the delicately fruity yet spicy character of this wine.
Special features of the 2024 vintage on the Ruwer:
The 2024 wine year on the Mosel was one of the most difficult in decades: late frosts, hail, high disease pressure, and lush vegetation led to massive yield losses. However, Riesling benefited from mild days and cool nights in the autumn, resulting in aromatically clear, fruit-driven wines with a fine acid structure . Overall, 2024 is considered a classic Kabinett and Spätlese year, with low volumes but impressive quality.
Conclusion:
The Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett 2024 showcases the strengths of this traditional vineyard site: tart and juicy, minerally characterized, and early-aging , yet with assured development potential. It embodies Maximin Grünhaus's philosophy of producing fine, long-lasting Rieslings with a clear sense of origin. A classic Ruwer Kabinett and, at the same time, an ambassador for the typical character of the Herrenberg .
