Saltaren Wines

Alex Saltaren Castro

A name worth remembering when it comes to Riesling in its purest form. Alex is one of the Rheingau's rising wine talents, pursuing his own (wine) dream alongside his work at the Peter-Jakob Kühn winery.

He worked as a sommelier in Colombia and trained as a winemaker in Germany. With his own wines, he pursues a self-taught learning process in the vineyards.

I've known his wines since 2019 and am truly impressed by his winemaking style and his consistent integration of nature's work. Since his wines (I only make 6-7 barrels in the end) always sell out quickly due to the limited quantities, I've secured some for you and would like to give a showcase to a young winemaking talent.

Saltaren Wines offers three wines:

Labeja Riesling dry

The "La Beja" bee is an important element in viticulture, ensuring diversity in the vineyard. Over 25-year-old vines from Mittelheim's St. Nikolaus vineyard are planted next to Peter-Jakob Kühn's renowned "Blackthorn" plot. Dense, with plenty of structure and length.

Edilia Riesling dry

Named after his grandmother, the vines in Mittelheim's St. Nikolaus are also older than those in Labeja. Deep, ripe minerality and texture define this wine.

Basilica Riesling dry

The latest addition comes from old vines, located next to the oldest church in the Rheingau, the Mittelheim Basilica of St. Ägidus. Pure precision and elegance. All wines are pressed using a classic basket press; whole-bunch pressing, skin contact time, and skin fermentation are standard for Alex. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in 300-liter used wooden barrels.
