Colares

Own-rooted vines in Atlantic sand.

Colares as a wine region

Colares is a small, historic wine region on the Atlantic coast west of Lisbon. Its unique feature is its ungrafted vines, which grow in deep, sandy soil where phylloxera cannot survive, allowing ungrafted old vines to remain here to this day. Right by the sea, the low-growing vines withstand wind and salt. The red Ramisco grape variety produces robust, age-worthy red wines, while the white Malvasia yields fresh, saline white wines. The region has remained small, making its wines true rarities. At Florian Fine Wine, we present wines from Colares that stand for distinctive origin.

Which wine from Colares goes best with which dish?

The distinctive wines from Colares are expressive food companions. A dry, aged Ramisco pairs very well with lamb and hearty braised dishes. The salty, fresh white Colares harmonizes with fish and seafood, as found on this coast. In our wine descriptions, you will find suitable recommendations for each food pairing.
