Porto is synonymous with the world-famous Port wine, produced in the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. It is a fortified wine, where fermentation is stopped by the addition of brandy, thus preserving a high level of natural residual sweetness. Traditionally, the Port wine then matures in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, opposite the city of Porto. Depending on the style, it ranges from the young, fruity Ruby to the long-aged, nutty Tawny.
