Rioja as a wine region

Rioja in northern Spain is arguably the country's most famous wine region. The backbone of the region is the red grape variety Tempranillo, often complemented by Garnacha. A characteristic feature is the long aging in oak barrels, which, depending on the level—from young Crianza to long-aged Gran Reserva—gives the wines their depth and distinctive character.
