2022 Weissburgunder dry Florian Reus - Franconia
local wine
Origin:
The Florian Reus winery in Franconia relies uncompromisingly on manual labor and natural cultivation . Around a quarter of the vineyards are cultivated entirely without machinery, and plant protection is carried out "by foot" with a hump-back sprayer. The goal is to produce authentic, long-lasting wines that authentically reflect the terroir. Franconia's limestone and loess-based soils give the wines their typical freshness, minerality, and clear structure.
Expansion:
The grapes were harvested by hand and pressed in an old, purely mechanical basket press – a method that allows for targeted must oxidation and enhances complexity. Spontaneous fermentation in barriques took place without temperature control. The wine then aged for 12 months on the full lees in wooden barrels , without batonnage or fining. It then matured for a further 8 months in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees before being bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulfur addition (50 mg/l) .
Aroma & Taste:
The nose reveals a nutty, smoky aroma , accompanied by yellow fruit notes of pear and apple, delicate vegetal hints , and a fine salty mussel note. On the palate, the wine is juicy, taut, and lively , with precise acidity that lends it freshness and bite. This is complemented by yeast notes, buttery notes, chalky minerality , and a subtle wood spice. The finish is cool, smoky, and persistent , still youthful, with great aging potential.
Food recommendation / Area of use:
Perfect with grilled fish , scallops , veal fricassee , or vegetarian dishes like risotto with porcini mushrooms or roasted cauliflower. It also makes a great accompaniment to medium-bodied cheeses like Comté or Taleggio.
Special features of the 2022 vintage in Franconia:
A promising start was followed by six hot and dry weeks , requiring close attention in the vineyards. From September onwards, the weather cooled, accompanied by rain, which led to a "juicing" of the berries and increased yields. Overall, it was a very good vintage , better than 2021: the white wines are light-footed, aromatic, and drinkable early , while the red wines are considered outstanding. For Pinot Blanc, this meant healthy grapes with clear varietal character and vibrant freshness .
Conclusion:
The 2022 Weissburgunder dry from Florian Reus is a powerful, complex wine with nutty and smoky notes, crisp fruit, and salty minerality . It combines the creaminess of barrique aging with the firmness and elegance of Franconian limestone soils . A wine that already delights, but with a little patience will gain even more depth – a wine of character with provenance and poise .
