2022 Chardonnay "El Diablo" – Senses Wines – Russian River Valley
Single-Vineyard Wine
Origin
The El Diablo Chardonnay comes from the El Diablo Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, one of California's most renowned Chardonnay regions. The vineyard is located on a ridge above Eastside Road and was planted by Ulises Valdez in 2008. The sandy-loam soils of marine origin and the cool climate with fog influence ensure a long ripening period and precise expression. Senses Wines was founded by three childhood friends with the goal of authentically reflecting top vineyards from Sonoma County in their wines.
Vinification
The grapes were selectively harvested and gently processed. Vinification is restrained and terroir-focused, with fermentation by natural yeasts. The wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, about 30% new. The goal is a wine with balance, structure, and subtle oak integration.
Aroma and Taste
The nose reveals pear, Golden Delicious apple, and citrus, accompanied by floral notes and delicate spice. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with ripe pome fruit and invigorating freshness. The finish is long, honeyed, and balanced.
Food Pairings
Ideal with lobster, scallops, or grilled fish. Also suitable with poultry, creamy sauces, or aged hard cheese. Serve at 10–12 °C.
Vintage Characteristics in the Growing Region
The 2022 vintage in Sonoma County was warm and intense, yet produced wines from top vineyards with balance, ripe fruit, and clear structure. Chardonnay shows complexity, power, and age-worthiness.
Conclusion
The 2022 Chardonnay "El Diablo" from Senses Wines represents a powerful yet precise Chardonnay. With ripe fruit, delicate spice, and mineral tension, it combines structure and freshness and clearly reflects the terroir-driven philosophy of Senses.
