2023 Chardonnay "Chestnut Hill" – Sandar & Hem – Santa Cruz Mountains

Single Vineyard Wine

Origin

The Chestnut Hill Chardonnay comes from a newer vineyard in the Sandar & Hem portfolio in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The site is located in Los Gatos at an altitude of approximately 396 meters, about 10 km from Monterey Bay. The west-facing amphitheater location and sandy loam soils over weathered sandstone and slate lend the wine freshness, precision, and mineral tension.

Vinification

The grapes were selectively hand-picked and gently processed. Vinification is carried out with restraint and a focus on terroir, emphasizing freshness, texture, and expression of origin. Small production with precise vinification to preserve the natural structure.

Aroma and Taste

On the nose, citrus, bright fruit, and delicate stony spice are evident. On the palate, the wine is precise, mineral, and lively, with clear acidity. The finish is elegant, fresh, and long-lasting.

Food Pairings

Ideal with seafood, grilled fish, or poultry. Also suitable with fine vegetable dishes or mildly aged hard cheese. Serve at 10–12 °C.

Vintage Characteristics in the Growing Region

The 2023 vintage in the Santa Cruz Mountains is considered excellent, characterized by cool, balanced weather and a long growing season. The wines show lively acidity, precision, and very good balance.

Conclusion

The 2023 Chardonnay "Chestnut Hill" from Sandar & Hem represents a precise, mineral, and elegant Chardonnay. With clear fruit, fresh acidity, and structured minerality, it showcases the cool-climate style of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
