Walter Polz
Walter Polz
Styria is in the fast lane; who hasn't tried its elegant and grippy Sauvignon Blancs, while its Chardonnays, Rieslings, Muskatellers, and sparkling wines are also causing a sensation. Cool Climate in the south of Austria.
One of the names that keeps coming up is Polz; there are as many Polz families in Styria as there are Müllers in Germany. And most of the Polz families also make excellent wines.
Last year, during VieVinum (Austria's equivalent of ProWein), we met in the evening for a tasting through a mutual personal contact.
Although we had never met in person before, the excellent wines and the evening's conversation immediately created good chemistry.
I got to know Walter's wines over 20 years ago during my training (incredible), back then at his parents' winery, Erich & Walter Polz.
I don't want to dwell too much on the family history, but after leaving the family business and a short time as a consultant for wineries, it was time for Walter to develop his "own" wines.
At nearly 60 years old, he took the step into his own passion again, doing everything from scratch himself, in the vineyard and in the cellar.
In collaboration with nature, where he feels most at home,
with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in some of Styria's best locations (Obegg and Hochgrassnitzberg).
On 6 hectares, 4 wines are produced: one Chardonnay and three different Sauvignon Blancs, with the essence of the vineyard being the core idea.
Biodiversity and environmentally friendly methods in the vineyard are almost self-evident, and the wine is aged at the friendly Sabathi winery.
