2019 Les Forts de Latour Chateau Latour - Pauillac
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
Château Latour is one of the legendary Premier Grand Cru Classés dating back to 1855. Les Forts de Latour , first vinified in 1966, has long been more than just a second wine: it comes from select plots outside the famous L'Enclos vineyard, as well as from young vines within this heart of the estate. Thus, it embodies the house's typical, powerful Pauillac style, but in a more accessible form with its own distinctive character.
Expansion:
The blend consists of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot . After careful hand-harvesting, fermentation took place in conical stainless steel tanks, with a maceration period of approximately four weeks. Aging took place for 20 months in barriques , of which approximately 50% was new wood . Since 2000, the wines have been bottled unfiltered to preserve their depth and authenticity.
Aroma & Taste:
The 2019 vintage is a dark purple color with violet reflections . The nose reveals cassis, blackberry, and wild berries , complemented by sweet spices, cigar leaf, cedarwood, and delicate vanilla . On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and smooth , with dense, dark fruit, ripe tannins, and lively acidity. The texture is both silky and powerful, with a long finish characterized by graphite and spicy minerality .
Food recommendation:
A wonderful accompaniment to classic meat dishes such as beef Wellington, crown of lamb, or venison stew. It also pairs well with grilled entrecôte , robust jus, or mature hard cheeses. It also makes a wonderful solo wine in a large Bordeaux glass for special occasions.
Special features of the 2019 vintage in Pauillac:
2019 is considered a great vintage in the Médoc. A frost-prone spring was followed by a hot, dry summer , ideally complemented by scattered rainfall. This resulted in perfect phenolic ripeness , intense aromatics, and exceptional balance. The harvest was carried out under relaxed conditions and produced wines that are equally powerful, precise, and age-worthy .
Conclusion:
The 2019 Les Forts de Latour presents itself as a muscular yet silky Pauillac that impressively embodies the house's signature style. With its combination of depth, elegance, and great aging potential , it demonstrates why Les Forts is far from being just a second wine, but will reach the level of a classified wine in its own right in many years.
