2020 Cuvée Our Departure Riesling - German Country Wine Rhine
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
In 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, the three renowned VDP wineries Robert Weil (Rheingau) , Battenfeld-Spanier (Wonnegau) , and St. Antony (Nierstein) joined forces to make a joint statement. Titled "Our Awakening," they created a cuvée made from Rieslings from their best vineyards—a fusion of Rheingau and Rheinhessen terroir. The label was designed by contemporary artist Bernd Zimmer , featuring the work "Konstellation ," symbolizing solidarity, new beginnings, and a new sense of togetherness after the pandemic.
Expansion:
The cuvée combines rigorously selected Rieslings from top vineyards. After hand-harvesting, the wines were vinified in the style of each individual winery—some in stainless steel, some in large wooden barrels with spontaneous fermentation and extended lees aging —before being carefully blended. The result is 360 bottles of this unique project, whose small-batch production further underscores its exclusivity.
Aroma & Taste:
The wine's nose displays citrus, grapefruit, and lime , complemented by tart herbal notes and smoky minerality . On the palate, it is crystalline and precise , with razor-sharp acidity and a distinctive saline minerality . The texture combines density and elegance, and the finish is long, complex, and vibrant —a Riesling with monumental radiance and great aging potential.
Food recommendation:
A wine for festive dining and fine dining. Ideal with scallops with lime , grilled turbot with fennel , or veal fillet with lemon thyme . Asian dishes with ginger and yuzu , as well as mature mountain cheese, also harmonize with its precise acidity and salty minerality.
Special features of the 2020 vintage in Germany:
The 2020 vintage produced excellent quality wines in Rheingau and Rheinhessen: a warm year with healthy grapes and moderate yields. The Rieslings were ripe, aromatically dense, and yet precise in their acidity . Thus, 2020 provided the ideal foundation for a project that draws on the strengths of the grape variety and the signature of three top wineries .
Conclusion:
The 2020 "Unser Aufbruch" cuvée is far more than a wine: it is a manifesto of solidarity in a time of crisis. It combines the best of the Rheingau and Rheinhessen, tradition and modernity, art and culture. With only 360 bottles produced, it is a collector's item and a symbolic wine that embodies the idea of a shared departure into a new chapter in German wine culture. Is it one of Germany's first supra-regional cult wines?
