2021 Buchertberg Red Blaufränkisch dry Herrenhof-Lamprecht - Styria
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
The Lamprecht manor house is located in Markt Hartmannsdorf, about 30 kilometers east of Graz, and is deeply connected to the region's history. The Augustinian Canons practiced viticulture here as early as the Middle Ages, before abandoning this practice in the 19th century. On the Buchertberg , the vines thrive on a south-southeast-facing slope of calcareous sandstone, silt, and gravel —a terroir characterized by freshness, minerality, and elegance. In addition to Burgundy varieties, Lamprecht has also replanted the region's heirloom red grape varieties, including Blaufränkisch as the main variety. The vines are still young (8–12 years old) but already exhibit great depth and character.
Expansion:
The grapes were selectively harvested and fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts . The wine was aged in traditional 600-liter startin barrels , a historic barrel style from Styria that allows for gentle aging. The wine was bottled unfiltered and without fining to reflect its origins as puristically as possible. With 13% alcohol by volume , only 0.2 g/l residual sugar, and 6.8 g/l acidity, it possesses power, precision, and great ageing potential.
Aroma & Taste:
The 2021 Buchertberg Red opens with clear, cool blackberry and sour cherry fruit , accompanied by delicate spice and earthy notes. On the palate, it is taut and focused , with lively acidity, distinctive tannins, and a salty, mineral depth. The aromas are precise and purist, with a long, cool finish, permeated with herbal notes. A Blaufränkisch with Burgundian elegance that prioritizes finesse over opulence.
Food recommendation:
An ideal accompaniment to pink-roasted lamb , braised beef , or game dishes . It also pairs excellently with earthy dishes like roasted mushrooms or beetroot risotto . Served in a large glass, it reveals its structure and depth particularly impressively.
Special features of the 2021 vintage in Styria:
2021 was a year with a small but very high-quality harvest . After a dry spring, a warm, long September ensured perfect ripeness. The red wines exhibit clear fruit, a firm structure, and fresh acidity , which makes them particularly age-worthy. Blaufränkisch, in particular, benefits from these conditions, presenting a cool, precise, and terroir-focused presentation.
Conclusion:
The 2021 Buchertberg Red is a prime example of Lamprecht's vision of reinterpreting heritage grape varieties and traditional winemaking methods. It combines the typicality of Blaufränkisch with Styria's unique character and its historic barrel-aging tradition. A characterful, long-lasting red wine with authenticity and depth—and proof that Styria can produce far more than just white wine.
