Product Information
2021 Schloss Johannisberger "Goldlack" Riesling dry – Schloss Johannisberg – Rheingau
Single vineyard wine
Origin
The Goldlack Riesling comes from the legendary Schloss Johannisberg, the cradle of Riesling since 1720. The south-facing vineyards on a quartzite hill, characterized by iron-rich loess and loam, yield precise, mineral, and long-lasting Rieslings. The grapes come from the “Mäuerchen quer” parcel in Langenberg, a prime section of the vineyard.
Vinification
After hand-picking and 48 hours of maceration, spontaneous fermentation takes place in 1,200-liter oak Stückfass barrels from the castle's own oak. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and 24 months of aging on full lees in the Bibliotheca Subterranea. Bottling in spring 2024.
Aroma and Taste
On the nose, flinty, with notes of flintstone, citrus, and apricot. On the palate, dense, powerful, yet elegant, with saline minerality and precise spice. The delicate, distinctive acidity provides tension, while creamy texture and fine wood spice add depth. The finish is long, saline, and noble.
Food Pairings
Ideal with turbot with shellfish jus, saddle of veal with morels, or Asian-spiced pork belly. Also suitable with aged Comté.
Vintage Characteristics in the Region
The 2021 vintage is considered classic, cool, and precise, with a long ripening period and low yields. The wines show a tight structure, high acidity, and great aging potential.
Conclusion
The 2021 Goldlack Riesling dry is the pinnacle of dry Schloss Johannisberg Rieslings. A powerful, elegant, and deeply mineral Riesling with great aging potential and aristocratic style
