Product Information
2021 Labeja Riesling dry Saltaren Wines - Rheingau
local wine
Origin:
The "Labeja" Riesling comes from the Rheingau's top vineyard site , Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus , just a few meters from the Rhine. The vines here are rooted in loess and calcareous loess-loam soils , which lend the wine its clear, mineral character. The name "Labeja" – Spanish for bee – is a tribute by winemaker Alex Saltaren Castro to the biodiversity and vitality of his vineyards, which he cultivates in a natural and sustainable manner.
Expansion:
Some of the grapes were destemmed before pressing to enhance the texture. The wine was aged in both stainless steel tanks and small 220-liter barrels , where it matured on its lees for approximately 12 months . This combination ensures clarity, freshness, and a fine, creamy depth.
Aroma & Taste:
On the nose, the 2021 vintage displays pronounced herbal notes , accompanied by yellow stone fruit and a hint of lemon zest . On the palate, it is bright, precise, and taut , supported by a fresh, pungent acidity . Aromatically, it develops toward a green, herbal-spicy direction , yet remains ripe and harmonious. The finish is characterized by a delicate melt, subtle tannin structure, and a mineral aftertaste . A Riesling full of energy and clarity.
Food recommendation:
Ideal with grilled zander with herbs , sea bream ceviche , or poultry in lemon sauce . It also makes a perfect accompaniment to slightly spicy Asian cuisine or goat's cheese . Its refreshing freshness is a delight as an aperitif.
Special features of the 2021 vintage in the Rheingau:
The 2021 vintage in the Rheingau was cool and challenging, with high levels of disease in the summer before a golden autumn ensured perfect ripeness. The Rieslings are characterized by low alcohol levels, high precision, and taut acidity —a classic cool-climate vintage with great aging potential.
Conclusion:
The Labeja Riesling dry 2021 combines the classic elegance of the Rheingau with the modern signature of Saltaren Wines : precise, fresh, and full of character , with herbal spice, mineral punch, and an invigorating lightness. A wine that demonstrates how authentically and individually Riesling can be interpreted in the Rheingau—and a first milestone in the oeuvre of Alex Saltaren Castro.
