2022 Hillside Vineyard Grenache Torbreck Vintners - Barossa Valley/Australia
single-vineyard wine
Origin:
The Barossa Valley in South Australia is considered one of the most important regions for characterful red wines of international renown. Torbreck Vintners , founded in 1994 by David Powell, today stands for expressive Rhône varieties rooted in old vineyards. The Hillside Vineyard supplies Grenache grapes from special sites with deep, gravelly-sandy soils, which, thanks to optimal drainage, impart both concentration and elegance to the grapes. The winery combines respectful cultivation with traditional craftsmanship – from hand-picking to fermentation and aging.
Expansion:
The grapes were selectively harvested by hand, destemmed, and spontaneously fermented in open concrete vats. After gentle pressing, the wine matured for 20 months in French oak barriques , with the proportion of new wood deliberately reduced to clearly emphasize the fruit and terroir expression. As is customary at Torbreck, bottling took place without fining or filtration .
Aroma & Taste:
In the glass, the 2022 Hillside Grenache presents a deep crimson color with violet reflections. The nose opens with spicy notes of cloves, black pepper, and herbs , complemented by ripe black fruits such as blackberries and plums. On the palate, the wine is powerful and dense , yet smooth and balanced . Juicy fruit is accompanied by mineral undertones, fine roasted aromas, and a silky texture. The finish is long, punchy, and stimulating , with lingering spice and elegant freshness.
Food recommendation:
This Grenache is a perfect partner for grilled lamb with Mediterranean herbs , braised beef , hearty stews, or spicy vegetable dishes like ratatouille. With its balance of spice and fruit, it also harmonizes with mature cheeses or game birds .
Special features of the 2022 vintage in the Barossa Valley:
The 2022 year presented significant challenges for winemakers in the Barossa Valley: a wet winter, isolated frost and hail events, and a late, cool summer led to reduced yields. However, thanks to the resilience of old vines and targeted vineyard management , exceptionally elegant and structured wines were produced. The Grenache grapes benefited from the extended ripening period, developing deep aromatics, precise freshness, and remarkable balance .
Conclusion:
The 2022 Hillside Vineyard Grenache is a powerful yet elegant Grenache with a clear Barossa Valley signature. It combines depth, spice, and mineral finesse , impressively demonstrating why Torbreck is one of Australia's most influential producers.
