2022 Hillside Vineyard Grenache Torbreck Vintners – Barossa Valley / Australia
Single Vineyard Wine
Origin:
The Barossa Valley in South Australia is one of Australia's most important wine regions and is known for distinctive red wines with an international reputation. Torbreck Vintners, founded by David Powell in 1994, today stands for expressive Rhône grape varieties rooted in old vines. The Hillside Vineyard supplies Grenache grapes from special parcels with gravelly-sandy soils, which promote both concentration and elegance due to their water permeability. The winery combines respectful cultivation with traditional craftsmanship – from hand harvesting to fermentation and aging.
Vinification:
The grapes were selectively hand-picked, destemmed, and spontaneously fermented in open concrete vats. After gentle pressing, the wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barriques, with the proportion of new wood deliberately reduced to emphasize fruit and terroir expression. Bottling was done – typical for Torbreck – without fining or filtration.
Aroma & Taste:
The 2022 Hillside Vineyard Grenache presents itself in a deep purple-red with violet reflections. On the nose, spice notes of cloves, black pepper, and herbs unfold, accompanied by ripe black fruits such as blackberries and plum. On the palate, it is structured, full, yet balanced, with juicy fruit, mineral accents, fine roasted aromas, and a silky texture. The finish is long, precise, and spicy, supported by freshness and elegance.
Food Pairing:
Recommended with grilled lamb with Mediterranean herbs, braised beef, hearty stews, or spicy vegetable dishes like ratatouille. It also pairs excellently with aged cheese or wild poultry due to its balance of spice and fruit.
Special characteristics of the 2022 vintage in the Barossa Valley:
The 2022 vintage brought challenging conditions: a wet winter, isolated frost and hail events, and a late, cool summer led to low yields. Thanks to the old vines and careful vineyard work, however, finely structured, balanced wines with clear aromatics were produced. The Grenache grapes benefited from the long ripening period, resulting in deep fruit, precise freshness, and harmonious balance.
Conclusion:
The 2022 Hillside Vineyard Grenache is a distinctive expression of the Barossa Valley, characterized by depth, spice, and mineral finesse. A precise, handcrafted Grenache that impressively reflects Torbreck's philosophy – tradition, terroir, and elegance.
