2023 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling VDP.Erstes Gewächs Robert Weil - Rheingau
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

The Robert Weil winery in Kiedrich was founded in 1875 and is now one of the international flagships of German Riesling. Wilhelm Weil is the fourth generation to manage the VDP member estate and continues the tradition that established its reputation at the end of the 19th century, when the wines were enjoyed at the tables of European imperial families and in the world's grand hotels. The Kiedricher Turmberg vineyard is a monopoly of the winery and was reinstated as a single vineyard in 2005. Its name derives from the keep of Scharfenstein Castle, dating back to the 12th century. At just 3.8 hectares, the Turmberg is one of the smallest, yet most distinctive, vineyards in the Rheingau. The soils, composed of phyllite rock with loess clay components, impart a distinct minerality and finesse to the wines.

Expansion:

The Turmberg vineyards are located on steep, barren slate slopes. Strict yield reduction to around 45–50 hl/ha, meticulous canopy management, and selective hand-picking ensure quality. After a brief maceration, the must is fermented with spontaneous yeasts . Aging takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in traditional 1,200-liter barrels , thus balancing freshness, precision, and depth.

Aroma & Taste:

The 2023 Turmberg Riesling presents a light straw yellow color . The nose reveals citrus fruits, white peach, and mirabelle plum , underpinned by mineral, slightly smoky notes and a hint of herbal spice. On the palate, the wine is taut and lively , carried by an invigorating acidity and clear fruit. The structure is precise and delicate, with a long, mineral, and elegant finish , with the typical cool style of the Turmberg, which sets it apart from the more powerful Gräfenberg.

Food recommendation:

Ideal with grilled pike-perch with lemon thyme , poultry in a light herb sauce , or Asian dishes with ginger and lime . Fresh goat cheese or oysters also beautifully showcase the wine's cool minerality.

Special features of the 2023 vintage in the Rheingau:

The year 2023 in the Rheingau was characterized by heavy rainfall in July and August, which particularly benefited Riesling. While Burgundy varieties had to be harvested selectively, the Riesling grapes remained healthy well into the fall. A golden October with cool nights provided perfect ripening conditions and enabled a rapid, concentrated harvest. Even in their youth, the wines are aromatic and fruity, with harmonious acidity and great aging potential . It is considered an exceptionally good Riesling year.

Conclusion:

The Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2023 showcases the delicate, mineral signature of this small monopoly vineyard. It combines clarity, freshness, and finesse with the elegance for which Robert Weil is internationally acclaimed. A wine that confirms the Turmberg as a distinct terroir profile alongside the Gräfenberg and is simultaneously an ambassador of the modern Rheingau – already fascinating, with assured aging potential.
