2023 Monte Nostrum Riesling dry Robert Weil - Rheingau
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

The Robert Weil winery in Kiedrich was founded in 1875 and is now considered a symbol of top Rieslings from the Rheingau region. The Monte Nostrum comes from the highest and coolest plots of the Kiedricher Berg , located above the famous Turmberg and Gräfenberg vineyards , directly on the edge of the forest. As early as 1160, the Archbishops of Mainz built the Castellum Nostrum castle on this mountain ridge to protect the valuable vineyards. The steep, barren soils of phyllite slate , combined with the forest as a water and temperature buffer, create a unique cool-climate terroir that lends the Monte Nostrum its crystalline, precise character.

Expansion:

The harvest was carried out selectively by hand in several rounds between early and mid-October. After a short maceration period, the grapes were gently pressed. Spontaneous fermentation and aging took place over 12 to 18 months in traditional double-barreled barrels (2,400 l) made of local oak , which lend the wine additional structure and a delicate texture.

Aroma & Taste:

The 2023 Monte Nostrum displays crystal-clear, precise aromas : notes of citrus fruits, white peach, and apple combine with wet stone minerality, floral hints, and delicate herbal spice . On the palate, it is taut, silky, and yet dense , carried by a laser-like acidity and subtle salinity. The long, stimulating finish displays tremendous tension and elegance.

Food recommendation:

A wine for special occasions and fine cuisine: ideal with grilled turbot with fennel , scallops with a citrus reduction , or veal fillet in morel cream . Its mineral elegance also complements Asian dishes with ginger and lime or mature goat cheese .

Special features of the vintage in the Rheingau:

The 2023 Rheingau vintage was characterized by abundant rainfall in the summer, which ensured a good water supply. The Riesling vineyards on the steep slopes, in particular, benefited from the combination of a humid summer and a golden autumn with cool nights. The grapes remained healthy, allowing for the harvest of high-quality grapes with an excellent sweet-acid balance. The vintage is considered very good to excellent for Riesling , with fruit-driven, elegant wines of great potential.

Conclusion:

The 2023 Monte Nostrum is the essence of the cool, elevated Kiedrich vineyards . It combines finesse, precision, and crystal-clear minerality to create a world-class Riesling. Alongside the more powerful Monte Vacano, it showcases the delicate, exciting side of the Robert Weil winery. A wine with iconic character and great aging potential , it already presents itself as a beacon of Rheingau Riesling .
