Product Information
2023 Orangelack Riesling Kabinett – Schloss Johannisberg – Rheingau
Single Vineyard Wine
Origin
Since 1720, Schloss Johannisberg has been considered the oldest Riesling winery in the world and the birthplace of Spätlese and Eiswein. The vineyards cover approximately 50 hectares, are oriented precisely south, and are situated on a quartzite hill with loess and clay soils. The 50th parallel ensures large temperature differences and precise aromatics. The Orangelack is a reissue of a historic Kabinett and combines depth, concentration, and playful elegance.
Vinification
The grapes were hand-picked and gently pressed as whole bunches. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, after which the wine matured for 6 months on fine lees in large wooden barrels (1,200 l), which creates structure and a fine texture.
Aroma and Taste
The nose reveals yellow plum, white peach, and orange blossom, accompanied by lavender, sage, and fine spice. On the palate, the wine appears light and almost weightless, with juicy stone fruit, mandarin zest, and exotic notes. The balance of fine sweetness, lively acidity, and salty freshness ensures a long, animating finish.
Food Pairings
Ideal with Asian dishes with a slight spiciness, spicy cheeses like Münster or Taleggio, and fruity desserts. Also excellent as an aperitif. Serve at 8–10 °C.
Vintage Characteristics in the Region
The 2023 vintage in the Rheingau was warm and sunny with sufficient water supply, resulting in ripe, aromatic, and balanced wines. Kabinetts, in particular, show fruitiness, elegance, and freshness.
Conclusion
The 2023 Orangelack Riesling Kabinett is a classic, yet complex Kabinett from Schloss Johannisberg. With stone fruit aromatics, floral spice, and perfect balance, it combines lightness, depth, and age-worthiness.
