2023 Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck dry Winery Alexander Schregel - Rheingau
single-vineyard wine

Origin:

The Roseneck mountain is one of Rüdesheim's legendary steep slopes and is part of the famous "Rüdesheimer Berg." It owes its name to the wild rose hedges that still grow between the rocky outcrops. The site is characterized by slate-quartzite soils with loess-clay components , which lend the wines their racy structure, ripe, finely integrated acidity, and impressive longevity. Alexander Schregel cultivates a small, old parcel here, from which he vinifies a Riesling of great tension and depth.

Expansion:

The grapes were selectively hand-picked and, as is customary with Schregel, spontaneously fermented , unfiltered , and bottled with minimal sulfur . Aging took place in large wooden barrels , which lends the wine structure and a delicate spice without obscuring the clarity and precision of the Riesling. Limited to only 950 bottles .

Aroma & Taste:

On the nose, the wine displays stony minerality , citrus zest , and white flowers , complemented by ripe stone fruit and a delicate herbal spice. On the palate, it is taut, powerful, and crystalline , with a salty vein that clearly reflects the slate character of the site. The distinctive acidity provides freshness and drive, while the fruit—peach, grapefruit, a hint of exotic fruit—adds elegance and depth. A long, vibrant finish.

Food recommendation:

Ideal with grilled zander or char , with crustaceans like langoustines, and also with Asian dishes with ginger and coriander . It's also delicious with mature hard cheese or a goat's cheese tart.

Special features of the 2023 vintage in the Rheingau:

The 2023 vintage is considered the clear winner for Riesling in the Rheingau. After a rainy summer, the steep slopes benefited from a consistent water supply. A golden autumn with cool nights produced healthy, aromatic grapes and a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity. The mountain vineyards in Rüdesheim, in particular, were at their best: complex, terroir-influenced Rieslings with freshness, expression, and excellent aging potential .

Conclusion:

The 2023 Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck Riesling dry is a precise, mineral, and complex single-vineyard Riesling that perfectly reflects the character of the Roseneck. Power and elegance go hand in hand here – a wine that delights with its energy when young, but also possesses enormous aging potential. A true gem from only 950 bottles – and a testament to Alexander Schregel's commitment to an uncompromisingly purist interpretation of the Rheingau's great terroirs.
